Members of UAP Pay Courtesy Call On The DCJ, Honor Him for His Contribution to The Association

Earlier, members, of the Uganda Association of Prosecutors (UAP) led by their President paid a courtesy call on the Deputy Chief Justice, Justice Richard Buteera, who is also their patron, to share light moments with him ahead of his retirement. The meeting took place at the Court of Appeal in Kampala.

Speaking during the meeting, Ms. Immaculate Angutoko (UAP President), thanked the Deputy Chief Justice for his mentorship, both as the Association’s patron and as a former Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). 

She acknowledged his role in strengthening appellate practice and informed members that the Association would continue working with him as its patron. She also appreciated his openness, noting that under his guidance, UAP had achieved many of its objectives.

Members commended the DCJ for his humility, graciousness, open-door policy, and willingness to make time for the Association despite his demanding schedule. They expressed gratitude for his leadership and the positive impact he has had on prosecutors. 

They also recognized his dedication to justice and his role in upholding the independence of the ODPP and prosecutors. His efforts in revamping the Court of Appeal and advocating for prosecutors were highlighted, with members hoping he would continue serving the justice system in some capacity.

The reflected on his career, recounting his time at the DPP and the institution's growth. He noted that when he joined, the office had only 21 lawyers, with most of the prosecution work handled by the police. Through collective effort, the Office expanded significantly, reaching about 200 State Attorneys by the time he left. 

Justice Buteera expressed satisfaction with the progress of prosecution services, praised the mentorship program at the DPP, and acknowledged the improvement in the quality of submissions. 

He reaffirmed his commitment to serving as UAP's patron and encouraged members to continue working together to enhance justice delivery.

The Association honored the DCJ with an honorary membership award, its highest recognition, in appreciation of his contributions. The award was presented to him by members during the meeting. There was also cake-cutting.

Notably present were Mr. Julius Tuhairwe (Association's Vice President), Mr. Arthurton Kukundakwe(Secretary General), Mr. Kulu Idambi J.B. (Assistant DPP), Ms. Betty Agola(Assistant DPP), Mr. Kyomuhendo Joseph (Chief State Attorney), and Ms. Irene Nakimbugwe (Chief State Attorney/Deputy Public Relations Officer, DPP), among others.

HW Dr. Alex Karocho Mushabe (Private Legal Secretary to the Deputy Chief Justice) and HW Allan Gakyaro (Personal Assistant to the DCJ) were also present.
